Former colliery gets a face lift

A former County Durham colliery has been transformed into a beauty spot thanks to the hard work of a group of e2e (Entry to Employment) and Pathways learners, who’ve been involved in an environmental project with New College Durham.

Durham County Council donated the land, which is on the former site of the Cater House Colliery. In partnership with the Council’s Countryside Ranger, the group of students have cleared the land to make way for a disabled access pathway and picnic site.

The 22 week programme gave the group of 15 vulnerable and at-risk students, the chance to learn valuable skills such as team work, health and safety, communication and citizenship. They will also receive attendance certificates and references from the Council, to help improve their future chances of employment.

An Interpretation Board has been installed on the site to celebrate the group's success.
