Friday 4 December saw the launch of the Equalitree in the main entrance of the FE building to raise awareness of Equality and Diversity.

Launch of the Equalitree

The Equalitree is the college’s Christmas tree and is the idea of one of the Equality Champions, Nigel Fisher as a way of raising money for 2 local charities linked to Equality:  the Tree Tops Children’s Ward at the University Hospital of North Durham and the North of England Refugee Service (NERS).

The tree, which was supplied and sponsored by Poplar Tree Nurseries, Shincliffe was decorated by staff who made a contribution to sponsor a bauble.  There was also the opportunity to write a Christmas message to put on the message board.  All money raised from the sponsorship will go to the 2 charities.

Tony Lewin, Deputy Prinicipal, opened the launch stating:  “New College Durham is committed to promoting equality and diversity within the college and raising funds for the community in the true spirit of Christmas”.

Students from the college were on hand throughout the launch to give out mince pies and biscuits to everyone who attended.

At lunchtime on Thursday 10 December, the College Choir sang by the well-decorated tree.
