Seb Green, an e2e student at New College Durham and his dog Flash, set off on 1 February 2008 for a round Britain walk raising money for two charities; the Starlight Children’s Foundation and the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance. The walk is a distance of approx 5,000 miles which he expects to complete in 10 months arriving home in time for Christmas. As well as raising money for charity Seb also hopes to raise awareness of sea safety and to complete the service section of his Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
The idea came about after Seb had to be airlifted out of waist deep mud and taken to hospital following a boating incident on the Dorset coast in 2005. His rescue involved inshore lifeboats, the auxiliary coastguard and helicopter, the total cost of which has been estimated at almost £20,000. The Youth Offending Team was involved following the incident and they offered Seb the opportunity to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. In 2006 he completed his Silver Award and in 2007 he completed the expedition section of his Gold Award.
Seb hopes to raise the sum of £20,000 equivalent to the cost of his rescue which will be divided between his two chosen charities.
