Craig Lowes, student at New College Durham, fought off strong competition to pick up two National awards in October.
The awards were presented at a ceremony in London and were for the Top 10 Exam Mark in the Construction and the Built Environment GCSE (Painting and Decorating) and the Top 10 Coursework Mark in the Construction and the Built Environment GCSE (Painting and Decorating).
Craig initially came to New College Durham as part of his GCSE Construction option, whilst he was studying at Fyndoune Community College. As part of the GCSE study programme, Craig came to the College to get a taste of the practical elements of brickwork, joinery and painting and decorating. It soon became apparent that Craig not only enjoyed learning the skills of painting and decorating but also that he had a natural ability.
Seventeen year old Craig, from Witton Gilbert, who has studied at the College for the past two years, said “I enjoy coming to the College and doing the practical elements of the course. The tutors are friendly and helpful and it’s a great environment to learn in.”
Craig has completed a one year Painting and Decorating Vocational GCSE course as part of the increased flexibility programme at NCD and is currently studying for his Foundation Construction Award in Painting and Decorating. He hopes to gain an apprenticeship once he finishes his studies.
Nigel Fisher, Craig’s lecturer said “Craig has shown great maturity whilst studying at the College, constantly working within tight deadlines and deserves every ounce of praise and recognition of his accomplishments so far. At the awards ceremony in London’s Westminster, Craig was a fantastic ambassador for the College, Fyndoune Community College, as well as his proud, supportive parents. I wish him every success for his future.”
