Sustainability

News about global warming and its impact on the environment is everywhere.  As a College we take our responsibility to reduce our impact on the environment very seriously and sustainability issues are high on our agenda.

Accessibility

There are 9.3 million people classified as disabled in the UK and 25% of the population, suffer from some form of mental health.   The new facilities of New College Durham are fully compliant with:
  • The Building Regulations including 2002. Part M Access and Facilities for Disabled People
  • Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) to have made all reasonable adjustments to physical features including access by November 2004.
  • Special Educational Needs and Disability Act (SENDA) to have made all reasonable adjustments to physical features including access by September 2005.
  • Design Guidance Document Building Sight issued by the RNIB.
  • Design Guidance Document and Codes of Practice for the Deaf – RNIB and Building Regulations 2002. This is compliant in that a Clarion Radio Vibrating pager/messenger system has been installed which links to the fire alarm system and alerts deaf students and staff issued with a pager upon activation of the fire alarm or message.
  • Full consultation with the Local Authority Access Officer during design.
  • Full consultation with Disability North during design.

That’s not all:  We also extend our environmental policies to our contractors and suppliers.  We operate sustainable procurement as best we can and all major contractors are asked to disclose their environmental policy.  We check how sustainable all the companies we deal with are and encourage them to take back any waste that is created by their products.

Our sustainable development not only protects the environment but it increases the quality of life and enhances the local area.
