Sustainability
News about global warming and its impact on the environment is everywhere. As a College we take our responsibility to reduce our impact on the environment very seriously and sustainability issues are high on our agenda.
Cater House Colliery
The e2e (Entry to Employment) and Pathways learners are currently participating in an environmental project in association with DCC Countryside Ranger at Cater House Colliery. This is a SSSI (Site of Scientific Special Interest) – which has been allocated to New College Durham and is situated behind the football fields at the College.
The site was one of two pits – the other being Framwellgate pit - which made up Framwellgate Colliery. The pit began production during the mid 19th Century and closed in 1910. During its heyday, the two pits employed 700 men and boys and produced 1,000 tonnes of coal per day.
The teams have undertaken various tasks and jobs including fell and tree management, grass cutting, raking and removal of debris, replacing old fencing, clearing litter and unwanted dumped rubbish, path construction and the introduction of seated areas used for disabled access. Two picnic areas have been established including seating and tables. An interpretation board, funded by the College, will be sited at Cater House displaying the College logo and information about the site and surrounding area. This is due to be completed shortly.
Allotment
Based at Byerley Park, Newton Aycliffe the e2e (Entry to Employment) and Pathways learners have been working with Age Concern on this project. Benefiting from the knowledge and experience of some senior members of the community, the learners are being taught how to cultivate a successful allotment. Many of the senior members involved with the project find the physical work a bit of an effort but have the perfect skills to advise and oversee the work undertaken.
Its not just a one way street, however. Whilst the learners are gaining knowledge, they also give the senior members information and advice on using mobile phones, ipods and other modern technological advancements.
