Sustainability
News about global warming and its impact on the environment is everywhere. As a College we take our responsibility to reduce our impact on the environment very seriously and sustainability issues are high on our agenda.
Oil
The Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005 come into effect on 16 July 2005. The Framwellgate Moor Campus and the School of Podiatric Medicine were registered with the Environment Agency to comply and a new 5,000 litre bunded oil storage tank with automatic float switch alarm when tank full was installed summer 2005. A specialist waste oil-recycling contractor now only empties the tank once a year.
Chemicals and Paint
These are disposed of by a specialist contractor in accordance with hazardous waste regulations.
Electrical Equipment
Newly classified hazardous waste, electrical equipment such as televisions, refrigerators, computers etc are also subject to the Waste Electroni Electrical Equipment Directive (WEEE) and are disposed of separately by licensed contractors to appropriately authorised sites. Regarding computers it is the suppliers responsibility to safely remove and recycle components.
Batteries
Are collected for safe disposal by an authorised specialist contractor.
Tyres
Are collected for disposal by a specialist contractor who shreds them ready for re-use or pellatised burning.
Scrap Metal
From motor vehicles, engineering etc is collected by a specialist contactor for recycling. It is hoped to make better use of waste metal recycling by setting up recycling bins throughout the College for the collection of aluminium cans.
Environmental Management System
We need to look to implementing an environmental management system and obtain ISO 14001 EM accreditation within the next five years.
