Confidential waste is put into recycling boxes, located throughout the campus and collected for shredding on site by a specialist contractor. Since the start of the contract with “Shred-it” in 2003 to date the total number of trees saved by shredding is 651 (this disclosure conforms with Data Protection Act).
There are blue wheelie bins located throughout the campus these are collected by estates and then moved to a larger recycling bin for collection by a specialist contractor, Durham City Council provided free of charge to meet DCC recycling targets. It is hoped to improve upon this collection and make better use of recording tonnage.
A compactor and bailing machine was purchased in September 2003. This paid for itself in the first year by reducing the amount of bins for collection and subsequent reduction in waste to land fill sites.
