If you are a teaching assistant, learning support assistant, special needs assistant, or in a similar role in a school environment, this course will enhance your skills and knowledge required for supporting teaching and learning in school and developing children and young people.

This course is designed to fit around your work commitments and is suitable for those employed (or volunteer) in a primary school.

Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools

This advanced course will further develop your skills and knowledge to prepare you for a career as a teaching assistant.


The content of this course reflects the increasing professionalism of the teaching assistant's role. This qualification will provide learners with a secure understanding of the knowledge and skills needed when supporting children or young people in a school environment.

Teaching & assessment

This is a part time programme where students can access support from the programme tutor and work based assessor. In addition, students have the opportunity to access college support services such as Personal Learning Coaches, Learner Support and ASC (Advice Support Careers).

Maths and English

Maths and English skills are essential for the workplace and university. If you have not achieved a new grade 9-4 or do not hold an A* to C in GCSE maths or English, your study programme at college will include teaching that will support you to progress your skills in these subjects. If you achieved a grade 3 or hold a D in either maths or English, you will re-sit your GCSE qualification with us. If your grade was lower than a 3, or your qualification is below a D, you will study Functional Skills to enhance your maths and English skills. Even if you have already achieved a grade 4 or above, or hold a A* to C, we will continue to develop your skills and help you progress further.

Industry links:

This course will enable students to develop the knowledge and skills required when supporting and learning in a real work environment. In addition students will be required to be already working in a primary school in a voluntary or employed capacity. This course is for professional practitioners to develop their skills and knowledge and have the opportunity to link theorical aspects to professional practice in a real working environment. In additional to sharing good practice with collegues and team members from a range of provisions.

You could progress to a Level 3 teaching and learning in schools qualification, or an early years qualification, at New College Durham. You could also study further to become a teacher or social worker.

Interview Instructions

All students will be asked to attend a 1:1 interview to discuss the course. Students will be asked to bring their predicted grades and two references - one personal and one from school. Students will be offered a conditional place until the grades are attainted and the references are checked.

Entry Criteria

  • 18 or over at begining of course
  • GCSE in English Language, or equivalent, at Grade C (or numerical equivalent)
  • Relevant employment / work placement in a school for at least one day a week
  • Clear enhanced DBS check.
