This sports management programme will top-up your foundation degree, in a related area, to a degree. It will give you the skills to succeed in the highly competitive business environment and provide you with an excellent foundation for a wide range of business and management careers.

In addition to core business and management modules, you can choose from a diverse range of modules in sports marketing and development to tailor your studies to your career goals.

  • Facilitate learners to develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of the principles and practice of management and demonstrate the ability to apply such principles in a range of specific contexts, to include general management and sports management.
  • Enable students to analyse and evaluate their own learning, and undertake independent self-development.
  • Provide a stimulating, rigorous and challenging academic experience that fosters a commitment to lifelong learning within the student.


2 cores of 20 credits as part of the BA (Hons) Management:
  • Managing Organisational Performance
  • Strategy & Change

1 core of 40 credits - Management Project module, as part of the BA (Hons) Management. However, students should choose to research a management project topic within the sport subject-specialist area.

2 specialist core modules of 20 credits, these are:
  • Sports Marketing Management
  • Sports Events and Hospitality Management

Teaching & assessment

The variety includes lectures, seminars, academic tutorials, group work, individual guided learning, the Management Project, case studies, role plays, workshops, computer simulations and the use of information technology. There is a Student Intranet plus an Academic Support Tutor and HE Advanced Personal Learning Coach.

We work in partnership with a number of sport and active leisure organisations within the region, including NUFC Foundation, SAFC Foundation, County Durham Sport, Durham County Council and The School Sports Partnership. We also work with a number of local clubs. There are opportunities to gain experience of working within partnership organisations. These partnerships enable us to embed real employer links into the sports pathway which include meaningful trips and visits, guest speakers and lecturers and the opportunity to gain experience of working with these organisations.

Study further with a Master's Degree or a professional qualification.

European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System Credits:


Entry Criteria

An appropriate HND or foundation degree with a minimum of 'Pass with Merit' in a Management/Business related subject or equivalent Level 5 diploma qualification equating to 240 CATs (Credit Accumulation and Transfer) points; 120 of them at Level 4 and 120 at Level 5.

Additional entry criteria
Applications for Accreditation of Prior Achievement (APA) are welcomed in accordance with the academic regulations. However, these must be discussed as part of the admissions process as once a student is registered to a programme APA may not be considered for approval.

For students without English as a first language, IELTs Level 6 or above (or equivalent) will be needed.
