Parents' Information

For your child Year 11 is a time for big choices, at 16. Although it's sometimes necessary to make last-minute decisions, the best time to start thinking about choices at 16 is a year ahead.

Progression opportunities for your child

A large proportion of our students progress into Higher Education. Students went onto study at various universities including: Northumbria, Newcastle, Sunderland, Durham, Teesside and New College Durham itself. Some students travelled further afield to universities throughout the country, such as, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, York, Edinburgh, Bristol, East Anglia, Nottingham, Essex and University College London.

Alternatively, a number of our students enjoyed the challenge of a ‘gap’ year before going to university and used this time to gain experience travelling and working, while others entered the employment market.

Some students also go onto an Apprenticeship programme after gaining valuable skills first on a full-time course.  For more information on our Apprenticeship programmes click here.

Whatever your child chooses to do, you can be assured that they will receive expert careers and educational guidance at the College to help them make the right decision.  For further information click here.

Taking your child higher; stay on and study here

The college has a 30 year history in producing graduates.  As well as outstanding facilities, we can offer students a supportive environment, accessible lecturers and an excellent experience.  Our fees are affordable too, plus generous bursaries of £1,000 are available to most full-time students.  We have an excellent reputation for achievement with 90% of our higher education students being successful in completing their studies in 2005-06.  We offer a wide range of full and part-time higher education programmes and professional qualifications including Foundation Degrees, Honours Degrees, Higher National Certificates (HNCs) and Higher National Diplomas (HNDs). Most of our higher education qualifications are career focused, with many of our programmes devised in consultation with local employers.

We are in academic partnership with the University of Sunderland which validates most of our higher education programmes, enabling students to access the library resources of the university.  At a social level, our Students’ Union works closely with the Students’ Union at the University of Durham, giving students access to their events.
