Parents' Information

For your child Year 11 is a time for big choices, at 16. Although it's sometimes necessary to make last-minute decisions, the best time to start thinking about choices at 16 is a year ahead.

Your child's health and safety at college

Your child's health and safety is our top priority.

 These are our guidelines:

  • No offensive weapons
  • No aggressive behaviour towards staff or other students
  • Mobile phones must be switched off in teaching and learning areas
  • There is no smoking on the College Campus
  • Put all litter in bins provided
  • No animals, except guide dogs
  • No computer hacking or misuse
  • No alcohol or illegal drugs.

Lost Property

Should your child lose or find any property, please contact the Security Office or a member of Security Staff via Main Reception.

The College cannot accept responsibility for the safety of students' personal possessions.  If you wish, you can take out your own personal insurance.   Details are available from the Students' Union.

Procedures for Comments, Suggestions & Complaints

If you want to make a complaint whilst your child is studying at the College a form can be obtained from Information & Main Reception.  Once completed, the form is to be returned to the Principal’s Office.  You will receive an acknowledgement receipt and details of the person who will be responding to your complaint within 5 working days.  A formal response will be sent to your home address within 10 working days.

Health & Safety

We want your child to be safe in College.  Detailed information on how to behave, how to obtain help if you need it and what to do in any kind of emergency is contained in the Health and Safety Handbook.

Your child should read this so they know what to do.

Exit routes to be used if students have to leave College buildings quickly are shown by green and white running man signs all around the College.  We make sure your child knows how to get out of buildings, and where to go to in an emergency.

If a student sees a fire they must make sure that they and others in the area are safe, and contact a member of staff or ring extension 4433 immediately.

Risk Management is being aware of risks to students, to others and to the College and taking active steps to reduce that risk.

If students see anything dangerous to themselves or others please report it at once on extension 4433.

Bullying

We expect everyone to help make the College a positive and safe place to learn.  Any form of bullying or harassment is not acceptable.

If you have any concerns or worries about anything in College about bullying, or about personal safety, please tell your child to talk to their tutor, another member of staff, ASC or a student representative about it so that the College can respond to your concerns.

Student Parking Permits

Students should park their vehicles in the marked bays.  The College roads have a 15mph speed limit and this should be observed at all times.  Vehicles parking in disabled bays must display the appropriate badge.  Students must not park their vehicles in unauthorised areas, bus bays or on double yellow lines.  Cyclists and motorcyclists should use the specific parking areas provided and should not use car parking bays.

Data Protection for Students

The College has a Data Protection Policy which outlines its commitment to the Data Protection Act 1998.  A full explanation of how this policy may affect you will be distributed at Induction and is also available on this website, along with the Freedom of Information Policy.

  • Data Protection Act 1998

No smoking on campus

From 1 July 2007, new legal restrictions on smoking in public places came into force. Under these restrictions, the smoking areas and the smoking shelter are no longer available to staff and students.  The shelter did not comply with the new regulations and therefore was taken out of commission and removed.

As a temporary measure, a smoking zone has been identified and marked out on the eastern perimeter of the campus (adjacent to the public footpath and near the exit barrier in the east staff car park). Anyone wishing to smoke must do so only in that area. Smoking is absolutely prohibited on any other part of the campus.

Permanent arrangements, which might include a totally smoke free campus, will be announced in due course.  The College strongly encourages all smokers to stop.  Advice on smoking cessation can be obtained from the Students’ Union on 0191 375 4546.
