New College Durham is working with North East Local Enterprise Partnership and North of the Tyne Combined Authority to deliver brand new  Skills Bootcamps in Green Skills.

Skills Bootcamps offer bespoke training solutions to bridge existing skills gaps within high demand sectors by providing local people with the technical training needed to secure employment within high demand/growth sectors. 

Skills Bootcamps offer free*, flexible courses of up to 16 weeks. They give people the opportunity to build up sector-specific skills and fast-track to an interview with a local employer. They are available for adults aged 19 or over who are either in work or recently unemployed and live in England**.

  • Construction and Plant

    Who is the bootcamp for?

    This bootcamp is aimed at employees (19+) in the construction sector who are ready to be upskilled, and unemployed people (19+) who would like to enter the construction sector. Applicants should either live or work for an organisation located in Newcastle, North Tyneside or Northumberland.

    What will the bootcamp cover?

    Following induction, you will start your learning in a face to face environment: 

    • Trowel Occupations Level 3 
    • Trowel Occupations Level 2
    • Certificate in Plant Level 2
    • Diploma in Plant Level 2
    • NVQ Diploma in Construction Operations Level 2 
    • NVQ Diploma in Construction Operations (Road Building) Level 2
    How long is the bootcamp?

    60 hours over a maximum of 16 weeks. Bootcamps will be run regularly over different timescales in order to meet students' and employers' needs.

  • Advanced Construction Supervision

    Who is the bootcamp for?

    This bootcamp is aimed at employees (19+) in the construction sector who are ready to be upskilled to move into a supervisory role. Applicants should either live or work for an organisation located in Newcastle, North Tyneside or Northumberland.

    What will the bootcamp cover?

    Following induction, you will start your learning in a face to face environment: 

    • Occupational Work Supervision Level 3 
    • Trowel Occupations Level 3 
    • Trowel Occupations Level 2
    • Certificate in Plant Level 2
    • Diploma in Plant Level 2
    • NVQ Diploma in Construction Operations Level 2 
    • NVQ Diploma in Construction Operations (Road Building) Level 2

  • Getting into Rail

    Who is the bootcamp for?

    This bootcamp is aimed at unemployed people (19+) who aspire to work in the rail sector and will provide you with the skills and knowledge that rail employers want. Applicants should live in Newcastle, North Tyneside or Northumberland.

    What will the bootcamp cover?
    • Rail Engineering Technician Level 3
    • Rail Engineering Track Maintenance Level 2 
    • Rail Security Level 2 
    • Plus the following industry tickets:
      • Small Tools
      • First Aid
      • Health & Safety
      • TIC
      • OLEC1
      • DCCR
      • CSCS Blue Card
      • SIA License

  • Route 2 Retrofit

    Who is the bootcamp for?

    This bootcamp is aimed at individuals 19+ who are either employed or unemployed and “work ready” and would benefit from specific training in new areas such as Construction Green skills to future-proof their careers. Applicants should either live in or work for an organisation located in County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside or Sunderland.

    What will the bootcamp cover?

    The bootcamp is adaptable to an employer’s needs and employers are encouraged to be part of the design.  The bootcamp could include the following qualifications:

    • NOCN Level 2 Award in Understanding Domestic Retrofit
    • CSCS card

    And bespoke modules such as:

    • Environmental Sustainability in Construction
    • Construction skills Level 3
    • Health & Safety in a Construction Environment
    • Domestic Retrofit Workshops tailored to employer needs e.g. ASHP, PV, Asbestos Awareness, Manual Handling/Working at Height/ Confined Spaces/Slips, Trips and Falls, GDPR, Health & Wellness, Equality & Diversity, Safeguarding, plus any other required CPD element to meet specific job role requirements
    How long is the bootcamp?

    Up to 200 hours over a maximum of 16 weeks. Bootcamps will be run regularly over different timescales in order to meet students' employers' needs.

  • Going Green with Lean

    Who is the bootcamp for?

    This bootcamp is aimed at individuals 19+ who are either employed or sole traders, who would like to support their organisation to transition towards Net Zero. Applicants should either live in or work for an organisation located in County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside or Sunderland.

    What will the bootcamp cover?

    This qualification will develop your understanding of lean organisation techniques within a business environment whilst using green methods. You will gain a vast knowledge of how to organise and implement the most cost/time effective strategies within their role. You will also get to grips with business improvement tools and techniques and learn how to work effectively in a business team. Furthermore, you will develop valuable transferable skills which you can draw on to support the improvement of business performance.

    How long is the bootcamp?

    60 hours over a maximum of 16 weeks. Bootcamps will be run regularly over different timescales in order to meet the students' and employers' needs.

  • Upskilling Smart Metering Engineers and Gas Engineers

    Who is the bootcamp for?

    These bootcamps are aimed at individuals 19+, smart metering engineers who would like to upskill to be qualified Level 3 gas engineers or Level 2 gas engineers who would like to upskill to Level 3.  Applicants should either live in or work for an organisation located in County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside or Sunderland.

    What will the bootcamp cover?
    • Level 3 Diploma in Gas Engineering (as required - prerequisite to qualification for heat pumps)
    • Level 3 Ground Source Heat Pump Installation
    • Level 3 Award Installation and Maintenance of Heat Pump Systems
    How long is the bootcamp?

    Between 147 and 217 hours over a maximum of 16 weeks. Bootcamps will be run regularly over different timescales in order to meet the students' and employers' needs.

  • Arboriculture

    Who is the bootcamp for?

    This Bootcamp is aimed at employees (19+) , employed or unemployed who would like to develop their skills to secure employment in the Arboriculture sector. Applicants should either live in or work for an organisation located in Newcastle, North Tyneside or Northumberland.

    What will the bootcamp cover?

    The bootcamp will give learners the relevant skills, knowledge and behaviours to become immediately employable in the woodland management and Biofuels (renewable energy) sector. Qualifications include:

    • Level 2 NPTC Certificate of Competence in Chainsaw maintenance And Crosscutting
    • Level 2 NPTC Certificate of Competence in Felling and Processing small tree
    • Level 2 NPTC Certificate in Brushwood Chipper
    • Award in Land Based Studies
    • Introduction to Biomass processes (RARPA)

  • Electrification, EV and Hybrid Maintenance and repair, and Diagnostics of Heavy plant

    Who is the bootcamp for?

    These bootcamps are aimed at technicians or engineers 19+ who are either employed or sole traders, who work on electric and hybrid vehicles, including heavy plant. Applicants should either live in or work for an organisation located in County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside or Sunderland.

    What will the bootcamp cover?

    These bootcamps will provide the technician or engineer with the required practical skills and knowledge to safely carry out service and maintenance, repair procedures, emergency and recovery procedures on high voltage vehicle electrical components and battery systems. These bootcamps deliver IMI accredited automotive certification at Level 3 of Level 4.

    The qualification provides an official entry route into TechSafe recognition leading to the IMI Professional Register.

  • Air Source Heat Pump Installation and Maintenance

    Who is the bootcamp for?

    This bootcamp is aimed at individuals 19+ who are either employed or unemployed and “work ready” and would benefit from specific training heat pump installation skills to future-proof their careers. Applicants should either live in or work for an organisation located in County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, North Tyneside, Northumberland, South Tyneside or Sunderland.

    What will the bootcamp cover?

    Go Green Training Academy is an Air Source Heat Pump training facility providing training to become fully qualified in the installation and service of ASHP systems.
    This bootcamp includes the following subject areas:

    • Water Regulations (1 Day)
    • Energy Efficiency (1 Day)
    • Legionella (1 Day)
    • G3 Unvented (2 Days)
    • ASHP Install & Maintenance (3 Days)
    How long is the bootcamp?

    60 hours over 8 days. These bootcamps will be run fortnightly to meet the high demand.

*Skills Bootcamps are free to individuals, however if you are an employer referring your existing employees you will co-fund the training dependent on the size of your business.      **Some Skills Bootcamps have additional eligibility criteria.
