The Access to Higher Education diploma will allow you to gain the entry criteria for a range of Science based degrees, including Biomedical Science, Pathology, Physiological Science, Environmental Science, Pharmaceutical Science and degrees related to Economics.
Access to HE diplomas start in the first week of September. Days and dates depend on the diploma/group chosen. This information is sent to all those with previously offered places in June/July or, given at interview.
If you want to study a degree but don't have the formal qualifications required then this programme can help you reach your goals.
Our Access to Higher Education students are taught in multi-purpose classrooms by our experienced teaching staff.
Aims
This diploma will prepare you for a university degree in Biomedicine, Pharmaceutical Science, Physiological Science, Economics and (university depending) single sciences such as Chemistry.
Modules
You will study graded modules, including the subjects listed below:
- Chemistry
- Biology
- Physics
- Maths.
The course also includes to ungraded or pass/fail modules. These are:
- Study Skills
- Access Project.

Teaching & assessment
The course is taught by experienced lecturers, many who teach these subjects at A-Level or in Higher Education.
You will be assessed through reports, in class assessments, practical experiments and presentations. You will also be expected to study independently - your lecturers will also suggest reading or research tasks or will set reading lists.
You could progress to study one of the following degrees at university; Biomedicine, Pharmaceutical Science, Physiological Science and Economics.
Interview Instructions
You should bring any certificates from prior qualifications with you, including maths and English.
Entry Criteria
You will hold GCSE English at grade 4 (C equivalent), or Functional Skills in English at Level 2 will also be accepted - but please check with your intended university destinations that they accept this qualification. If this hasn’t already been achieved you can complete English alongside the Access diploma.
You will also hold GCSE Maths at grade 6 (B equivalent). If you hold a grade 5 (C) then please contact the course team to discuss suitability. You must hold a maths qualification before you start the Access to HE diploma.
