This course is designed to give an overview of some of the main concepts within the field of counselling to clarify any misconceptions. It is for anyone interested in developing listening skills, gaining an understanding of the counselling process and developing personal insights and self-awareness. The course will not teach you to be a counsellor, but it will give you useful skills which can be applied in your everyday life and may help you decide whether or not you want to train as a counsellor.

Teaching & assessment
The course will run for five weeks on a Monday evening from 6-8pm from 22 February to 22 March and from 12 April to 17 May 2020.
The course uses a participative approach using tutor input, group discussions, group work, case study, and is backed up with hand-outs to reinforce learning. This includes skills practice which will be assessed through tutor and peer observation and self- reflection.
This qualification gives learners the opportunity to investigate the knowledge and skills needed to use counselling skills and engage in a helping interaction appropriately. It will be a useful progression route for those interested in furthering their study or widening their work role. It is not suitable for people looking for psychological assistance to deal with personal issues.
Entry Criteria
The qualification will be useful for you if you would like to develop your use of counselling skills for use in a personal or work-related capacity. There are no formal entrance requirements.
