This course will ensure you have the technical and practical knowledge and skills for basic maintenance on motor vehicles and motorcycles and to progress onto either further education or an apprenticeship.

Having access to our state-of-the-art workshops means you will be able to get hands on experience in a working environment. You will develop an array of skills that are essential for impressing potential employers, and making a positive impact within their business.

Our motor vehicle students get up close and personal with an Aston Martin car.


This qualification aims to provide you with the essential skills needed for basic maintenance on motor vehicles and motorcycles in a hobby context.

On completion of the course, you will have gained the skills and knowledge to progress to a full apprenticeship.

Day and time of study will be confirmed before the start of your course.

Teaching & assessment

Teaching will be a combination of lectures and practical work in either a classroom or workshop environment. There will be a particular emphasis on the practical application of skills.

You will be assessed via observation of practical activity, supported by verbal questioning. You will be given full support and additional time may be available to help you during examinations. Personal Learning Coaches (PLCs) are available to help you plan and support you with all elements of the programme.

You will complete a practical assessment workbook which will contain a variety of practical tasks and knowledge based questions to cover all learning outcomes – this will be graded as pass or fail. Additionally, you will engage in online multiple choice tests which will be graded as pass, merit, or distinction.

Maths and English skills are essential for the workplace and university.

The units covered have direct links to higher level courses and the current apprenticeship standards. If you choose to pursue further education, or an apprenticeship, in this area, you will use the knowledge and skills acquired on the programme. This knowledge and understanding will enable you to be successful and become a positive contributor to an employer’s business.


Throughout the course, you will develop the essential skills to stand out to potential employers. Having the opportunity to experience a real working environment will ensure you are able to communicate effectively with others, maintain positive relationships, and fulfil your employer’s expectations - making you a valuable employee.

This course will provide you with a basic understanding of motor vehicle and will help you gain the knowledge and skills to prepare you for further study.

Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship Motor Vehicle

This intermediate course will prepare you for further study or a career in the motor vehicle industry.


Level 2 Certificate Motor Vehicle (Light Vehicle Maintenance & Repair Principles)

This practical course will provide you with an excellent understanding of light vehicle maintenance repair, and the knowledge and skills required for a career in this sector.

Additional Costs

There will be opportunities for you to attend enrichment activities, such as classic car shows and Go Karting - these will come with a small fee but are optional.

Interview Instructions

You will be invited into the College to attend an informal interview to assess your suitability to the course. Please bring a full list of qualifications including GCSE, if applicable.

The interview is a chance for you to meet with staff and have a tour of the College facilities. Interviews may be conducted in an initial group presentation and then a personal discussion with a member of staff. Parents/guardians are welcome to attend and discuss any areas of concern.

Entry Criteria

You will be required to have a good level of maths and English.

At interview, you will undertake initial assessments in literacy, numeracy (E3 and L1) and an automotive test.
