This course provides learners with a basic introduction to the decorating trade to prepare learners for progression.
As a painter and decorator, no two jobs are exactly the same. You will need to work with lots of different tools and materials and will need to know your products well.
You will study handling and storing materials, using working platforms, protecting working areas, preparing surfaces for decorating, and applying decorating materials. You will be continually assessed in practical skills and theory.
This course aims to provide you with the essential knowledge and skills needed to work in painting and decorating. The units studied develop both written and practical skills for the workplace. You will get the opportunity to develop your skills in a real working environment.
You will have the opportunity to build many transferable skills, both theoretical and practical, as well as a sound knowledge and understanding of key processes and techniques used.

Teaching & assessment
Assessment is portfolio based - you will be expected to provide evidence gathered via photographs of practical projects.

Maths and English skills are essential for the workplace and university.

The study programme is designed to allow you to demonstrate and showcase the skills learned within sessions. You will be encouraged to enter regional and national competition.

At Level 1, you will engage in set sessions that aim to improve your employability skills. To do so, you will need to register with REEDncfe.
You could progress to Level 1 Diploma Painting & Decorating, or an apprenticeship in a relevant subject.

You will have the opportunity to purchase these at the start of term at approximately £12 each.
You will be invited to attend an interview at the College with one of our construction team.
Your interview will include:
- A presentation detailing the College’s course key messages
- Initial literacy and maths assessments
- One-to-one opportunity for student or parent discussion
- Tour of facilities.

There are no formal entry requirements for the course, however, a good level of maths and English would be beneficial.
