This course provides learners with a basic introduction to the decorating trade.

As a painter and decorator, no two jobs are exactly the same. You will need to work with lots of different tools and materials and will need to know your products well.

You will study handling and storing materials, using working platforms, protecting working areas, preparing surfaces for decorating, and applying decorating materials. You will be continually assessed in practical skills and theory.

A New College Durham student won the North-East Apprentice Painting and Decorating heat at York College.


This course aims to provide you with the essential knowledge and skills needed to work in construction. The units studied develop both written and practical skills for the workplace. You will get the opportunity to develop your skills in a real working environment.

You will have the opportunity to build many transferable skills, both theoretical and practical, as well as a sound knowledge and understanding of key processes and techniques used.


  • Health and Safety
  • Knowledge of Technical Information, Quantities and Communication with Others
  • Knowledge of Construction Technology
  • Erect and Dismantle Access Equipment and Working Platform
  • Prepare Common Surface Types for Decoration
  • Apply Basic Paint Systems by Brush and Roller
  • Apply Foundation and Plain Papers
  • Produce Standard Decorative Finishes.

Teaching & assessment

Assessment is through online multiple-choice unit exams and practical based Synoptic tests, designed to mirror work tasks found in industry.

You will be assigned a tutor to support your learning throughout the course. You will also have access to a Personal Learning Coach (PLC) for support with any further issues.

The study programme is designed to allow you to demonstrate and showcase the skills learned within sessions. You will be encouraged to enter regional and national competition, and will gain hands-on experience with a work placement.


At Level 1, you will engage in set sessions that aim to improve your employability skills. To do so, you will need to register with REEDncfe.

You could progress to Level 2 Painting and Decorating at New College Durham, or an apprenticeship.

Alternatively, you could progress into employment within the painting and decorating sector.

Additional Costs

You will need to purchase a bib, brace, overalls and safety footwear for practical sessions.

You will have the opportunity to purchase these at the start of term at approximately £12.00 each.

Interview Instructions

You will be invited to attend an interview at the College with one of our construction team.

Your interview will include:
  • A presentation detailing the College’s course key messages
  • Initial literacy and maths assessments
  • One-to-one opportunity for student or parent discussion
  • Tour of facilities.
