New College Durham wins National Hair Champions Title

Hair and beauty students win the National Champions title at the Association of Hairdressers and Therapists final.


This course aims to provide you with the practical and theoretical knowledge required to perform a variety of cutting and colouring skills, from full head to woven techniques. You will also develop the skills needed to style and dress hair to meet client specification.

You will carry out consultations with clients, understand the importance of Health & Safety in the workplace and acknowledge the expectations and challenges of the hairdressing industry.


You will study the following:
  • Cut hair using basic techniques
  • Colour and lighten hair
  • Advise and consult with clients
  • Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
  • Perm and neutralise hair
  • Art of dressing hair
  • Promote products and services
  • Health & Safety
  • Working in the hairdressing industry

Teaching & assessment

You will be assigned a personal tutor for the duration of your course. You will carry out practical assessments with your tutor once you feel you are ready to be assessed. The assessments will be carried out at various points in the year.

Each unit will involve assignments and/or internal and external exams. You will be required to provide some clients and models throughout the year to work on, so that you can maximise your learning and explore the skills you have been learning.

These opportunities will ensure you will learn additional skills and improve your confidence levels throughout the course.

We will encourage you to enter competitions, such as World Skills and the AHT competition.


You will be required to undertake a work placement within an external salon for a minimum of 70 hours, to ensure you develop the essential skills to work in this fast paced industry. It is your responsibility to find a work placement, therefore, you can decide whether you want to carry out your placement in a block period of time or one day a week.

You could progress to Level 3 Hairdressing full or part-time at New College Durham.

Alternatively, you could seek employment or self-employment as a stylist.

As part of the course you will be expected to pay £5.00 for a locker and £25.00 activity fund, for trips and visits.

Interview Instructions

You will be invited to attend an interview with a curriculum team member, where you will be provided with further course information and expectations will be discussed to enable you to make an informed choice.

In June you will be invited to attend parents evening – this is a great opportunity for you to purchase kit and uniforms for your course. A summer school invitation will also be sent out to invite you into college for a taster day.

Please bring your GCSE grades and any other qualifications relevant to induction. At this stage your suitability to the course will be assessed.

Entry Criteria

No formal qualifications are required to gain access to the course, however, you must possess appropriate communication skills, and the desire to work in the hairdressing and beauty industry.

You will complete various theory and practical skills tests to establish your suitability to the course. You will be required to have a willingness to learn, a flexible and positive attitude, who works well in a team.
