This course will provide you with an advanced knowledge, and the skills, to help you pursue a career within the decorating trade.
As a painter and decorator, no two jobs are exactly the same. You will need to work with lots of different tools and materials and will need to know your products well.
You will study areas such as decorative techniques, applying paints by brush or roller, applying standard wallpapers to surface areas, and applying basic specialist paint finishes.

New College Durham hosted the annual North East Regional heat of SkillBuild on Tuesday 18 June 2013.
A New College Durham student won the North-East Apprentice Painting and Decorating heat at York College.
This course aims to provide you with the knowledge and skills needed to work in painting and decorating. The units studied develop both written and practical skills for the workplace. You will get the opportunity to develop your skills in a real working environment.
You will have the opportunity to build many transferable skills, both theoretical and practical, as well as a sound knowledge and understanding of key processes and techniques used.
You must complete the following essential units:
- Health, Safety and Welfare in Construction and Associated Industries
- Knowledge of Technical Information, Quantities and Communication with Others
- Knowledge of Construction Technology
- Erect and Dismantle Access Equipment and Working Platforms.
You will also study the following units:
- Prepare Surfaces for Decoration
- Apply Paint Systems by Brush and Roller
- Apply Standard Papers to Ceilings and Walls
- Produce Specialist Decorative Finishes
- Apply Water-borne Paint Systems Using High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP) Spray Equipment.
Average number of hours per week
9am-10.30am and 1pm-5pm
9.30am-12noon and 1pm-4pm

Teaching & assessment
Assessment is through online multiple-choice unit exams that will test your knowledge of the units studied.
You will be assigned a tutor to support your learning throughout the course. You will also have access to a Personal Learning Coach (PLC) for support with any further issues.
Maths and English
Maths and English skills are essential for the workplace and university.
A number of Project Managers from high profile North East construction companies visit the College, to discuss employment opportunities and the construction industry.

The study programme is designed to allow you to demonstrate and showcase the skills learned within sessions. You will be encouraged to enter regional and national competition, and will gain hands-on experience with a work placement.
You will be offered the opportunity to undertake a work placement with a local industry related company. Opportunities to take part in community based projects may also arise. We work in partnership with local employers to provide you with hands-on experience.
Kris has now set up his own painting and decorating company (KDT Decorators Ltd).
You could progress to Level 3 Painting and Decorating at New College Durham, or an apprenticeship.
Alternatively, you could progress into employment within the painting and decorating sector.

You will need a bib, brace, overalls and safety footwear for practical sessions.
You will have the opportunity to purchase these at the start of term at approximately £12 each.
You will be invited to attend an interview at the College with one of our construction team.
Your interview will include:
- A presentation detailing the College’s course key messages
- Initial literacy and maths assessments
- One-to-one opportunity for student or parent discussion
- Tour of facilities.

You will hold a Level 1 qualification in painting and decorating, and be skilled in carrying out practical tasks. Basic literacy and numeracy skills are required.
