This course provides learners with the relevant skills and knowledge to pursue a career within the sport industry.

You will use our modern gym facilities, and undertake a work placement, to gain a practical understanding of sports coaching and strength and conditioning training.

Teambuilding at Kirkley Hall

Our sport students ventured to Kirkley Hall Outdoor Activity Centre to take part in a teambuilding excursion.


This course aims to provide you with the introductory skills and knowledge to start a career in sport of progress with employment in the sector. It will prepare you for higher or further education, through full-time or part-time study.

You will choose a pathway and select units that reflect your career or academic aspirations. On completion of the course, you will have the skills to enter employment in the sport and active leisure sector or to progress to higher or further education.

You will gain and develop essential skills that are valued by employers and higher and further education institutions. You will develop knowledge and understanding of the vocational sector.


Mandatory units:
  • Participating in sport
  • Sports coaching
  • Developing sporting skills and tactical awareness.

Optional units include:
  • Strength and conditioning training
  • Performance analysis for sport
  • Psychology for sports performance
  • Plan, deliver and evaluate an activity session.

Teaching & assessment

You will engage in practical and classroom-based lessons, and will be assessed using the following methods:
  • Observation of performance
  • Workbooks
  • Portfolios
  • Written assignments.

Maths and English

Maths and English skills are essential for the workplace and university.

If you have not achieved a new grade 9-4 or do not hold an A* to C in GCSE maths or English, do not worry, your study programme at college will include teaching that will support you to progress your skills in these subjects. If you achieved a grade 3 or hold a D in either maths or English, you will have the opportunity to re-sit your GCSE qualification with us. If your grade was lower than a 3, or your qualification is below a D, you will study Functional Skills. These qualifications will help you enhance your maths and English skills and can be taken at levels between Entry Level 1 up to and including Level 2. Even if you have already achieved a grade 4 or above, or hold a A* to C, we will continue to develop your skills and help you progress further.

Maths and English skills are essential for the workplace and university.

Our sports department have a number of strong links with employers and industry specialists in the local area, to help support your learning. They include:
  • Durham & Chester le Street School Sports Partnership
  • Team Durham
  • Newcastle United Foundation
  • Durham County Council
  • County Durham Sport.


You will be expected to undertake a meaningful work placement within the industry. This is a great opportunity for you to get hands-on experience and develop your skills in a real working environment.

After completing the course you could progress onto the Level 3 Sports courses at New College Durham.

Interview Instructions

You will be invited to attend an informal interview at the College with a member of our sport team. Your suitability to the course will be assessed at this stage.
