This course will provide you with the essential technical and practical skills needed to prepare you for a career within the make-up industry.
You will perfect the art of applying make-up and creating different styles to meet a client’s needs.
Our modern on-site salon, Halo, reflects the best of industry standards and provides specialist resources for beauty therapy.
Our Level 3 students got the low down on a very popular skin exfoliation treatment.
Our Level 3 Beauty students experienced a luxury spa day at Seaham Hall Spa, to gain an insight into how the spa industry works.
This course aims to provide you with a range of advanced technical and practical skills, and the knowledge required for you to seek employment or further training within the make-up industry.
You will develop the skills needed to carry out services, such as applying make-up and creative make-up artistry.
You will study the following mandatory units:
- Principles of Working in the Make-up Industry
- Anatomy and Physiology for Make-up Artists
- Research, Develop and Showcase Make-up and Hair Artistry Designs
- The Art of Applying Make-up
- Hair Artistry
- Creative Make-up Artistry
- Face and Body Art.

Teaching & assessment
You will be assessed through:
- Oral questioning
- Written tests
- Practical assessments
- Observation of your practical performance.
You will be assigned a personal tutor for the duration of your course. You will carry out practical assessments with your tutor once you feel you are ready to be assessed. The assessments will be carried out at various points in the year.
Each unit will involve assignments and/or internal and external exams. You will be required to supply your own clients and models throughout the year to work on, so that you can maximise your learning and explore your new skills.
Maths and English
Maths and English skills are essential for the workplace and university.
Each term you will engage with external employers through lectures, hands-on workshops, role-play interview opportunities, CV development workshops and much more. These opportunities will ensure you are able to develop additional skills and improve your confidence levels.
We encourage all students to enter competitions, such as World Skills and the AHT competition.
You will be expected to undertake a work placement within an external salon for a minimum of 70 hours, to ensure you develop the essential skills to work in this fast-paced industry. It is your responsibility to find a work placement, therefore, you can decide whether you want to carry out your placement in a block period or one day a week.
Following successful completion of this qualification, you will be qualified to work as a make-up artist for photographers, department stores, make-up stores or salons. You will also be equipped to work as a freelance make-up artist.

Additionally, as part of your course you will be expected to pay £20 towards trips and visits and a £5 deposit for a locker.
You will be invited into the College to attend an interview. Please bring your GCSE grades.
You will have the opportunity to purchase uniforms and kits at the Prospective Parents' Evening, and you will be invited to our summer school so you can get a taste for the course.

You must hold a grade 4 in GCSE English (or Level 2 equivalent), and will possess appropriate communication skills, and the desire to work in the hairdressing and beauty industry.
You will complete various theory and practical skills tests to establish your suitability to the course.
