Aims

You will further develop the knowledge and skills required to work within the carpentry and joinery industry. The units studied develop both written and practical skills for the workplace. You will get the opportunity to develop your skills in a real working environment.

The study programme is designed to allow students to demonstrate and showcase the skills learned within sessions. You will be encouraged to enter internal and external carpentry and joinery competitions.

  • Install and Maintain Non-structured and Structured Components.

Teaching & assessment

At the end of each unit, you will answer knowledge based questions. The Level 3 exam will test your knowledge using a multiple-choice format.

You will receive a series of practical tasks to carry out prior to your final assignment.

Regular guest speakers and enrichment activities are organised for throughout the year.
We will encourage you to enter regional and national competitions, such as the World Skills Show, and will support you throughout your journey.

Placement:

You will have the opportunity to gain work experience with a local construction company. In previous years, community projects have been undertaken under the supervision of college staff or in cohesion with a nominated company.

You could progress to HNC Civil Engineering or Construction and the Built Environment at New College Durham.

Alternatively, you could progress to employment within the carpentry & joinery industry.

You will hold a Level 2 qualification in carpentry and joinery, and will be skilled in carrying out practical tasks.

Basic literacy and numeracy skills are required and a keen attitude and interest in the subject would be beneficial.
