This course aims to provide you with the knowledge and skills to perform popular make-up sessions for clients, such as:
- Body Art
- Styling and colouring hair
- Fashion and photographic make-up
- Apply airbrush make-up
- Media Make-up
- Apply prosthetic pieces and bald caps
- Art of colouring hair
- Creative hairdressing design skills.
You will study the following units:
- Monitor and Maintain Health & Safety Practice in the Salon
- Creative Hairdressing Skills
- Design and Apply Face and Body Art
- Fashion and Photographic Make-Up
- Apply Airbrush Make-up
- Art of Colouring Hair with Temporary and Semi-permanent Colour
- Apply Individual Semi-permanent Lashes
- Style and Dress Hair Using a Variety of Techniques.
Each unit will also have assignments and or internal and external exams for each unit. You will be required to provide some clients and models throughout the year to work on, so that you can maximise your learning and explore the skills you have been learning.
Day and time of study will be confirmed before the start of your course.
Teaching & assessment
You will work with your tutor to learn the relevant practical skills and theory knowledge over the duration of the course for each unit. Practical assessments will be carried out with your tutor once you feel you are ready to be assessed, these assessments will be carried out at various points in the year. Each unit will also have assignments and or internal and external exams for each unit. You will be required to provide some clients and models throughout the year to work on, so that you can maximise your learning and explore the skills you have been learning.
Having access to our on-site commercial and training salons means you will be able to get hands-on experience of a working environment. You will be guided and supported in both practical and theoretical sessions. The skills you develop will be assessed via observation of practical work.
It is encouraged to undertake a work placement one day a week to enhance your learning experience, and prepare you for assessment and industry.
You will further develop your employability skills, including CV writing, interview techniques, and team working attributes.
We will encourage you to enter competitions, such as Worldskills and the AHT competition internal and external, attend lectures and seminars for CPD.
We also have close links with ND make-up artists and body art experts.
You will be required to undertake a work placement within an external salon to ensure you develop the essential skills to work in this fast paced industry. It is your responsibility to find a work placement, therefore, you can decide whether you want to carry out your shifts in a block period of time or one day a week.

You will be required to purchase a uniform and kit for your course. Information on prices for these items are detailed on the forms below.
You will be invited into college for an informal one-to-one interview with one of our team. At this stage, you will learn more about the course, and we will assess your suitability to the course.
You will hold three GCSEs at grade A-C/9-4, however, access to the course may be granted on the basis of holding a Level 2 qualification in make-up.
