Overview

This course provides learners with an understanding of travel and tourism, and encourages further development of the knowledge and skills required to pursue a successful career in this industry.

You will study areas such as worldwide destinations, promotions and sales, tour guiding, package holidays, farm and rural tourism, worldwide adventure tourism, and tourism in the UK. You will be required to partake in a two week work placement within the travel industry to gain relevant skills and experience within the environment you will be training to work within. Due to our strong links with a variety of leading employers within this sector, you will be given the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the travel industry through guest speakers and trips.

The aims of the programme are to:
  • Provide an educational foundation for a range of careers in the Travel Industry
  • Provide relevant studies for seeking employment
  • Provide flexibility, knowledge, skills and motivation as a basis for future studies and career development
  • Develop a range of skills and techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in working life.


You will be offered multiple opportunities to develop your knowledge and skills. This will involve pinpointing and exploring tourist destinations and areas of interest around the world, including visitor attractions and events. The qualification will provide you with an in-depth knowledge and understanding of how to build a successful career as a travel consultant or tour guide.

Alongside the main programme of study, this course aims to develop your employability skills. Placement:

As part of the programme, you will be required to partake in a two week work placement within the travel industry. This will be to gain skills and experience within the environment you will be training to work within.

You could progress to FdA Tourism Management at New College Durham or a relevant programme at university. Alternatively, you could move onto an apprenticeship or into full-time employment.

Additional Costs

You will be required to purchase your uniform from an external company - order forms can be requested from the travel and tourism team on parents evening or at enrolment. Uniform will cost approximately £39.00 +pp.
In addition, we expect you to attend college with all the relevant stationary equipment. This includes:
  • Two A4 lever arch folders
  • A notebook
  • Pens
  • A memory stick.


You will be given the opportunity to participate in a number of visits throughout the year. These range from day visits to week long overseas residentials. Some of these will require payment if you wish to take up the opportunity. We try to offer a range of visits to suit all budgets, these will be announced throughout the year. With the more costly trips, we will endeavour to announce these as early as possible in order to allow a payment plan.

Interview Instructions

You will be invited for a group presentation and one-to-one interview. At this stage, you will discuss target grades and select the appropriate course.

Entry Criteria

In order to access this course, you must possess a minimum of four GCSEs at grades C or above (or equivalent), ideally this will include English and maths, or a Level 2 Travel and Tourism qualification.
