This post-graduate level qualification is designed to enable you to develop your understanding of organisations and the external context within which HR operates. Using critical analysis, self-reflection and problem-solving techniques, you will learn how to develop and implement creative and strategic HR solutions that drive organisational performance.

You will further develop your leadership skills to ensure you are capable of engaging members of staff. You will learn good practice strategies for ethical staff recruitment, selection and dismissal. The final project will involve investigating a HR problem within your own organisation, and developing recommendations and solutions based on primary and secondary research.


This programme is a widely recognised professional qualification and aims to provides a route to CIPD Chartered Member status.

This programme aims to develop your knowledge and understanding in key areas of HR, as well as an understanding of HR in a business context. You will have a sound understanding of the knowledge, skills and behaviours required of a professional HR Practitioner and be able to demonstrate these at a strategic level.

Day and time of study will be confirmed before the start of your course.

Teaching & assessment

Each session includes taught theory and seminar activities. The sessions are inclusive and develop your knowledge and practice of being a HR practitioner.
Sessions are interactive and encourage you to share ideas and experiences.

You will engage in the following to build your knowledge:
  • Case studies
  • Case law
  • Topical and up-to-date research
  • Group activities
  • Individual work.

As part of this apprenticeship, you are required to complete 20% on-the-job training. You will also undertake an End Point Assessment (EPA). Please see further information on End Point Assessment and the apprenticeship standards that you will be required to demonstrate/evidence in your role.

Industry links:

We have links with the CIPD North East Branch and will encourage you to attend at least one of their events per academic year. These are based in the region and provide excellent support and advice, usually free of change.

We have industry links with ACAS, CIPD and professional organisations who may come in and deliver guest speaker slots throughout the programme.

Additional Costs

You must purchase a CIPD membership at the start of the programme as this is an essential requirement for you to work in HR. CIPD may withhold your certificate on completion if you do not hold a membership.

Interview Instructions

You will be invited to attend an informal interview.

Entry Criteria

You will hold English and maths at Level 2 or you will be required to study towards these.

You will hold a Level 5 CIPD or Level 6 CIPD qualification in relevant subject and you must be working within a relevant HR role.
