This course will further develop your counselling skills and help you to take the next step in your training to become a counsellor, or enhance your current role, either in a paid or voluntary capacity.
Entry Criteria
You will be required to hold a Level 2 certificate in Counselling Skills, or equivalent.
You could be considered for the programme, should you have the relevant prior skills and experience.

You will be invited to attend an informal one-to-one interview, and to complete a short assessment.
Study Aims
This qualification aims to introduce you to the essential counselling skills used in everyday life and at work. You will also develop an understanding of some of the theoretical approaches underpinning the use of these skills. You will develop sound planning, delivery and assessment skills for the workplace.
Modules Studied
- Developing and practising counselling skills - this unit covers the stages of initiating, developing and maintaining a helping relationship, and how to provide an effective environment to practice counselling skills. Using support and supervision, learners will also understand how to bring a helping relationship to an end effectively, whilst providing the best outcomes for both the client and themselves.
- Understanding different approaches to the use of counselling skills - this unit provides learners with an awareness of two different approaches that can be used throughout the counselling relationship.
- Working ethically in helping relationships - this unit helps learners understand the contexts in which counselling skills can be used. You will learn how to refer clients to other organisations that can offer suitable help, whilst maintaining ethical standards.

Teaching and Assessment
You will take part in lectures, seminars, group work and skills practice.
Assessment with include the following methods:
- Case studies
- Reports
- Small group presentations
- Portfolio of evidence
- Written assignments.
Maths and English
Maths and English skills are essential for the workplace and university.
If you have not achieved a new grade 4 or above or do not hold an A to C in GCSE maths or English, do not worry, your study programme at college will include teaching that will support you to progress your skills in these subjects. If you achieved a grade 3 or hold a D in either maths or English, you will have the opportunity to re-sit your GCSE qualification with us. If your grade was lower than a 3, or your qualification is below a D, you will study Functional Skills. These qualifications will help you enhance your maths and English skills and can be taken at levels between Entry Level 1 up to and including Level 2. Even if you have already achieved a grade 4 or above, or hold a A to C, we will continue to develop your skills and help you progress further.
Placement
There is no mandatory placement, however, you will be encouraged to gain experience of working in a counselling related environment.
You could progress to FdA Counselling at New College Durham.
