You will learn knowledge, skills and behaviours, such as:
- Understanding of general engineering/manufacturing mathematical and scientific principles, methods, techniques, graphical expressions, symbols formulae and calculations used by engineering technicians
- Understanding the structure, properties and characteristics of common materials used in the sector
- Obtaining, checking, and using the appropriate documentation (such as job instructions, drawings, quality control documentation)
- Undertaking the work activity using the correct processes, procedures, and equipment
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Focus on quality and problem solving.
Entry Criteria
Individual employers will set the recruitment and selection criteria for their Apprenticeships.
You will hold four GCSEs at grade 4/C, or equivalent, including maths, English and a science.

Engineered and manufactured products and systems that Engineering Technicians work on could involve mechanical, electrical, electronic, electromechanical, and fluid power components/systems.

Teaching and Assessment
The Foundation Competence Diploma will be delivered in college on a three Day release basis in the first year, consisting of lectures and practical workshop delivery, and will be assessed through a portfolio produced against performance evidence criteria gained from a mixture of practical and eritten evidence.
The Foundation Phase Gateway assessment is completed over three days after completion of the Foundation Competence and comprises of practical scenario(s) and a set of related tasks. The scenario(s) will be based on a typical situation that is likely to occur in the workplace. The tasks will provide explicit instructions about the activities that you will need to complete in a way that demonstrates skills, knowledge, and behaviours you have learnt and developed within the foundation phase of your apprenticeship.
The Development Competence Diploma will be delivered over years 2, 3 and 4 in the workplace by your employer, assisted by a college Apprenticeship Skills Coordinator, and will be assessed by the completion of a portfolio of naturally occurring evidence, ASC Observations and written underpinning knowledge assessments.
The Development Knowledge Diploma will be delivered in college on a day release basis in years 2 and 3, consisting of lectures and practical workshop delivery, and will be assessed through a mixture of practical, written and online assessments.
End Point Assessment
You will also complete an End Point Assessment (EPA), completing the following elements:
- EPA Gateway documentation submission
- An Occupational Competence Validation Interview (Viva)
- A Professional Engineering Competence Assessment (PECA)
- Final Employer Endorsement.
You could progress to a relevant university level HNC course.
