Study Aims

This apprenticeship is perfect for you if you would like to progress within the sector as an engineering technician in mechantronics maintenance.

You will:

  • Apply safe systems of working
  • Make a technical contribution to either the design, development, quality assurance, manufacture, installation, commissioning, decommissioning, operation or maintenance of products, equipment, systems, processes, or services
  • Apply proven techniques and procedures to solve engineering/manufacturing problems
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills in communicating both technical and non-technical information
  • Have a commitment to continued professional development.

Engineered and manufactured products and systems that Engineering Technicians work on could involve mechanical, electrical, electronic, electromechanical, and fluid power components/systems.

Modules Studied

You will complete the following qualifications during the apprenticeship, including the modules detailed below.

Level 2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Competence) [[Complying with statutory regulations and organisational safety requirements ~ Working efficiently and effectively in an engineering environment ~ Using and communicating technical information ~ Conducting business improvement activities ~ Producing components using hand fitting techniques ~ Assembling and testing fluid power systems ~ Wiring and testing programmable controller-based systems ~ Preparing and using lathes for turning operations ~ Preparing and using milling machines ~ Producing CAD models (drawings) using a CAD system.]]]

Level 2 Award for Foundation Phase Gateway Assessment

  • Producing Components using Hand Fitting Techniques
  • Wiring and Testing Programmable Controller Based Systems
  • Maintaining Fluid Power Equipment.

BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Development Competence) – Mechatronics Maintenance Technician

  • Health & Safety
  • Mechanical Principles
  • CAD
  • Pneumatics & Hydraulics
  • Communications
  • Engineering Project.

Teaching and Assessment

The Foundation Competence Diploma will be delivered in college on a three Day release basis in the first year, consisting of lectures and practical workshop delivery, and will be assessed through a portfolio produced against performance evidence criteria gained from a mixture of practical and eritten evidence.

The Foundation Phase Gateway assessment is completed over three days after completion of the Foundation Competence and comprises of practical scenario(s) and a set of related tasks. The scenario(s) will be based on a typical situation that is likely to occur in the workplace. The tasks will provide explicit instructions about the activities that you will need to complete in a way that demonstrates skills, knowledge, and behaviours you have learnt and developed within the foundation phase of your apprenticeship.

The Development Competence Diploma will be delivered over years 2, 3 and 4 in the workplace by your employer, assisted by a college Apprenticeship Skills Coordinator, and will be assessed by the completion of a portfolio of naturally occurring evidence, ASC Observations and written underpinning knowledge assessments.

The Development Knowledge Diploma will be delivered in college on a day release basis in years 2 and 3, consisting of lectures and practical workshop delivery, and will be assessed through a mixture of practical, written and online assessments.

End Point Assessment

You will also complete an End Point Assessment (EPA), completing the following elements:

  • EPA Gateway documentation submission
  • An Occupational Competence Validation Interview (Viva)
  • A Professional Engineering Competence Assessment (PECA)
  • Final Employer Endorsement.
