This apprenticeship is perfect for you if you would like to progress in one of the specialisms within maintenance and operations engineering, including technician roles in electrical, mechanical, wind turbines, electromechanics, or plant operations.You will gain the knowledge and skills required in the industry with your employer on-the-job, and will develop a wide range of transferable behaviours.

Entry Criteria

Your employer will set the recruitment and selection criteria, this typically includes:

  • Four GCSEs at grade 4/C, including maths, English and science
  • A relevant Level 3 qualification in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering

You will be have an interview with the Apprenticeship team . As part of your interview you will carry out a number of tasks which will help us assess your suitability for the course. Please bring evidence of relevant qualifications and proof of ID, e.g. passport or driving license or birth certificate.

Study Aims

As a Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician, you will work on various types of plant and equipment commonly found throughout the Engineering Industry sectors. Technicians can be expected to migrate through these sectors during the course of their career.This Apprenticeship programme will provide you with the:

  • First principles relating to the operation and maintenance of appropriate plant and equipment
  • Relevant industry health and safety standards, regulations, and environmental and regulatory requirements
  • Maintenance and operational practices, processes and procedures covering a range of plant and equipment
  • Skills to read, understand and interpret information and work in compliance with technical specifications and supporting documentation
  • Opportunities to inspect and maintain appropriate plant and equipment to meet operational requirements
  • Skills to assess and test the performance and condition of plant and equipment
  • Ability to communicate, handover and confirm that the appropriate engineering process has been completed to specification, and provide information to stakeholders in line with personal role and responsibilities

Teaching and Assessment

You will be assessed through the following:

  • EPA Gateway documentation submission
  • An Occupational Competence Validation Interview (Viva)
  • A Professional Engineering Competence Assessment (PECA)
  • Final Employer Endorsement]]]You will not progress to complete your End Point Assessment until you have successfully passed through the EPA Gateway. To pass through the Gateway you need to have formally demonstrated to your employer that you are occupationally competent. The judgement of Occupational Competence is completed through mechanisms agreed and generated by the Employer or Provider and is not the same as the Occupational Competence Validation Interview. You must have also taken and passed the following assessments:[[[Level 2 Mathematics
  • Level 2 English
  • Mandatory Qualifications
  • On-Programme Portfolio
  • Apprentice Assessment Consent Form
  • Employer Confirmation of Occupational Competence
You will be coached and mentored to ensure you fully understand the EPA process and are in a strong position to fulfil its requirements.

End Point Assessment

The final assessment for the qualification is an End Point Assessment (EPA) which must be passed to achieve the full qualification.
