New partnership with the Wood Pile Durham

We have formed a new partnership with the Wood Pile to ensure our students get adequate work experience opportunities. The Wood Pile is a local company based in Durham that specialises in craftwork and reclaiming old furniture, and aims to support individuals who want to work but are finding it difficult to secure a place in employment.

Ten day work placements have been organised for mixed ability students, including those with mental health issues and physical difficulties. This opportunity to develop employability skills in a real work environment has proven to be invaluable to students.

Our Visual Arts students have also reaped the benefits of the partnership as they have been able to acquire work experience in a relevant area to their chosen career path.

Karen Stubbings, director of Visual Arts, commented: “It is great to see students getting involved in practical creative projects – they have been doing such a great job!”

Siobhan Scott, Level 3 Graphic Design student, said: “My work experience at the Wood Pile deepened my love for hand crafts, and has inspired me to create my own business. The overall experience was thoroughly enjoyable and helped me decide to focus my FMP on upcycling art.”
