Construction student takes part in virtual masterclasses

Matthew Hawkey, Level 3 Extended Diploma Construction and the Built Environment student, took part in a five-day interactive experience with SCS Railways (Skanska Costain STRABAG) to understand more about Europe’s largest infrastructure project.

The work experience opportunity involved a series of masterclasses, webinars, collaborative activities and practical scenarios to enhance Matthew’s knowledge across a variety of areas.

Matthew said: “I was interested in this work placement because it is relevant to my course and will help me choose the right path for me, such as being a site manager, architect or general construction.”

The sessions provided Matthew with a vision of where he could progress with the course he is studying at NCD.

He continued:

“I am passionate about construction and building, from the little things, such as a bedside table, to bigger structures such as a house. I love learning new things and my course helps me see how structures can be redesigned and built.”

This fantastic virtual experience gave Matthew an insight into the industry, including the different roles across a construction and engineering company, and the space for global opportunities.

“I met industry experts and gained many transferable skills, such as communication skills, as well as developing specialist career skills, such as project experience.”
