Top games for Sports Students
Students from the college’s Sport department volunteered at the County Durham Sainsbury’s School Games.
The bi-annual event aims to bring together students from local schools to complete against each other and improve participation in sport across the County. The students gained experience running events and coaching local children.
Conor Henderson, Level 3 Sport student, said:
“It was a really enjoyable day, and I found it really rewarding to help the children in their selected sports. It really helped me improve my coaching and communication skills.”
New College Durham students took part as part of their Leadership Programme, an element of the Sport Study Programme that allows students to gain additional sporting qualifications. A pilot project has been established with Durham County Council to create a Leadership and Volunteering College Academy.
Lindsey Robinson, Project Officer from County Durham Sport, said:
“The students were recruited onto the project through an application process to ensure they really understand the outcome and commitment of the activity. They were a great support on the day! This is a project I would definitely want to continue in the future.”
