Former Inspiral Carpets frontman, Tom Hingley, visits Music Management Foundation Degree students at New College Durham.
Aspiring musicians and music fans were invited to a free seminar at New College Durham, where Tom Hingley, frontman of the Inspiral Carpets, lead a seminar entitled ‘A Life in Music’.
Tom will share with guests his vast knowledge of the music industry, describing his experiences as a leading figure in the late 80’s and early 90’s Manchester music scene, his solo success and more recently as front man of The Lovers.
Tom came to fame as the lead singer and songwriter with one of Manchester’s most influential bands, the Inspiral Carpets, which alongside fellow bands, the Stone Roses and Happy Mondays, were one of the pioneering groups of the ‘Madchester’ era.
Tom approached the College to offer his services as a speaker, after hearing positive comments about the Foundation Degree in Music Management programme through his work with Generator North East Popular Music Development Agency. The seminar will be open to fans and members of the public and will involve a question and answer session led by Tom and Kitty Hedley, Manager of indie band Spokes. Together they will give advice on how to manage a band in today’s climate. Tom will also mentor students in a song writing workshop, before being interviewed by National Diploma Media student, Katherine Langton.
Tom has completed an extensive solo acoustic tour of the UK, Ireland and Germany playing to over fifty thousand people. His style plays testament to twenty five years of singing, in church and later as lead singer of the Inspiral Carpets and the Lovers. Tom says “I only play songs I like', that's the only real criteria.”
This year sees him release a solo acoustic record 'Thames Valley Delta Blues', which he will be showcasing in March at the South by South West Music Convention in Austin, Texas.
A career in the music industry is hard work but if you are passionate about music very few industries are as exciting to work in!
