Hair & Beauty Students Win Seven Medals
Talented Hair and Beauty students from New College Durham walked away with an impressive haul of seven medals at the prestigious AHT (Association of Hairdressers and Therapists) regional competition at the Federation Brewery in Gateshead last week.
The New College Durham team were up against strong competition from eleven other North East colleges and faced tough judging from top local and national hairdressing and beauty professionals including Worldskills Coach, Robert Rouseaux.
The team worked hard to showcase their skills and were rewarded with Gold medals in the Body Art (Nicole Gibson), Ladies Evening Style (Samantha Twist), Commercial Nail Art (Georgia Reed) and Face Painting (Elle Lowes) categories while the Half Body Painting and Nail Art categories produced bronze medals for Alex Henderson and Nicol Walker respectively.
One of the competition’s main attraction is the Total Team Look Presentation which involves models from each team having their hair, make-up and costume styled by their team mates. The College’s theme of Willy Wonka impressed the judges and won the team the Silver Medal.
The North East heat of the competition is co-ordinated by Lindsay Deswert, New College Durham’s TEL Lead Practitioner in Employability and Skills for Hair and Beauty and Regional AHT Chair. Lindsay commented: “We are delighted with our students’ performance at the competition. The standard was extremely high and the students should be commended for all of the hard work, time and effort that they put into the competition. This is a fantastic achievement.”
All medal winning students from New College Durhamwill represent the North East in the AHT national final, to be held at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool on March 11 2019.
Lindsay continues: “We’re very much looking forward to now competing in the national final and representing the North East. The experience that our students gain from competing regionally and nationally is invaluable. It’s a fantastic opportunity that develops students’ confidence and enhances their employability skills.”
Lindsay added: “We would also like to thank Wella for their continued support to New College Durham and the AHT competition and for supplying the prizes for the winning students.”
Second year music students from New College Durham were a fantastic addition to the day, entertaining the audience while the competition took place.
