Hat trick celebration for football team
The Football Development Centre at New College Durham is celebrating three major achievements – becoming U18s North East College League champions, winning the cup final, and reaching the national final of the Association of Colleges / ECFA (English Colleges Football Association) Futsal U18 Championships.
The Men’s Football Development Centre ended a successful season by claiming the North East College League title. The team achieved 29 points from 12 games, winning nine of them, drawing two and only losing one.
Ronnie Thompson, head coach for the Men’s Football Development Centre at New College Durham, said: “We are really proud of the players and coaches and what they have achieved. The college’s Football Development Centre is going from strength to strength and these achievements are another step forward.”
Continuing their winning streak, the college football team beat Dyke House College Hartlepool, 2-0 in the cup final, which saw them bring home their first major trophy for the college.
Reliving the glory of becoming cup final winners, Ronnie Thompson said: “The first half saw both teams playing great attacking football, with New College Durham managing to break the opposition lines on a few occasions by playing some superb team football, however neither team could find the back of the net and it was level 0-0 at half-time.
“The second half started the same as the first-half finished, with opportunities being created by both teams again. Ten minutes into the second half saw a tactical double substitution of Callum Smith and Matty Cartwright entering the game, and what an impact they both had! The last 10 minutes of the game was the turning point and New College Durham got their reward for playing great football and scored to make it 1-0.
“New College Durham’s second goal put the game out of the oppositions reach to give New College Durham Football Development Centre their first major trophy.
“The players have shown great resilience and endeavour from the start of the season through to the end, playing some great football along the way. True champions aren’t made easily and to get to where they are now has taken a great deal of effort and hard work, training day after day, and playing week after week in some quite awful conditions is what champions have to do and these lads have done that all season.”
Making it a hat trick celebration, the Football Development Centre then reached the national finals of the ECFA Futsal U18 Championships at Leeds International Futsal Arena, after beating the tournament favourites Myerscough College, in the semi-final of the regional qualifiers.
The final will take place at the Futsal Arena in Birmingham on 24th June 2015. Speaking about the forthcoming final, Ronnie said: “We will be carrying the New College Durham flag high and will do our very best to play great football, as well as bring more silverware back to the college.”
