Sports students score a visit from Peter Beardsley

Former England and Newcastle United striker Peter Beardsley visited New College Durham to inspire sports students and to give them an insight into playing at the highest level of professional football.

Over 70 of the college’s sports students heard Peter talk candidly about his experiences playing football under management greats such as Bobby Robson and Kevin Keegan, and his anecdotes and tips on management, leadership and coaching.

Peter, who is the current Under-21 coach at Newcastle United Football Club (NUFC) was invited to the college by Ronnie Thompson, sports lecturer and Football Development Centre Manager at New College Durham, who also coaches at NUFC.

Ronnie said: “This was a great opportunity to hear first-hand from one of Newcastle United's greatest players about what is required to play and coach at the top level of professional football.  His talk was entertaining as well as enlightening and the personal experiences of competing at elite level which he passed on to the students was priceless. He is a great character.”

Students from the Football Development Centre at New College Durham also attended the session and Peter was keen to advise these players about their approach to the game.

19-year-old Tom Curry from Meadowfield, a second year Foundation Degree Applied Sport and Exercise Science student, has played for the Football Development Centre for four years, having started on Level 3 Sports Diploma.  He said: “As a coach and a student wanting to be a PE teacher, I was really impressed by his talk and that he gave us so much of his time.  He was really friendly and his stories were great. I will definitely use some of his tips in future.”

Peter has also invited the current New College Durham sport students to Newcastle United’s first team training centre to watch him coach the Under-21s team.

Steven Bell, Curriculum Manager for Sport at New College Durham, said: “We are very lucky to have great connections with the North East football clubs, and we are very grateful to Peter for coming in today. He has achieved some great things in his time and is a great role model, no matter who you support.  We hope that he has inspired our students and I know that everybody is looking forward to seeing him in action at the training ground.”
