Petros Mesfen

Course: ESOL (16-18 Study Programme)

Petros had been searching for an institution that offered an ESOL programme. He felt New College Durham was the perfect place to develop his skills and achieve his goals.

He said:

“I was so glad when I found New College Durham. The most important thing to me was the quality of the curriculum. I liked everything about the College, it is organised, safe and peaceful. I had a great experience at the College and the facilities were always clean and tidy. I can see why it is one of the most popular colleges in the North East!

“The best thing about the course was being able to learn English in a relaxed environment. As an individual who had never spoken English before, I found the classes easy to follow and I was able to learn the English language effortlessly. I also enjoyed meeting new people with different ethnicities and exchanging skills.

“We visited Beamish Museum and the National Glass Centre in Sunderland. The range of activities we took part in were good fun and we all enjoyed ourselves. I have decided to progress to Level 1 Plumbing at New College Durham, and will complete GCSE English and maths alongside the main study programme. I hope to progress to a Level 3 Plumbing Apprenticeship and become a qualified plumber.

“I am so glad I did the ESOL programme as it was a great stepping stone to access to the plumbing course. I have learnt how to live in the UK and have really enjoyed my experience here so far.”

Petros has progressed to study Level 1 Plumbing at New College Durham.
