Alex had ambitions to become a teacher but she soon realised that the A-Level route she had chosen to follow was not the right path for her. She is currently studying on the Level 3 Childcare and Education course at New College Durham, which will help her to achieve her career goal in a more practical way.
Alex said: “I started at New College Durham in November 2012 after changing my mind about A-Levels as I felt they weren’t the right option for me. I joined the Choices Plus programme and started on the Level 3 Childcare and Education course two months after it had started, however through hard work I have caught up and am now well on my way to completing the course on time and achieving an overall A grade.
The staff at New College Durham were really helpful and confirmed that joining the course would be the best option to develop my knowledge and skills as I want to be a teacher. This course has definitely been the right one for me as it has given me the practical skills needed to work in childcare, and be successful in my chosen career path. Because of the many opportunities this course provides, I have been employed by my current placement where I work as a teaching assistant three days a week. The work experience aspect of this course has been an invaluable opportunity which has boosted my confidence and given me the experience of a variety of real-life job situations based around childcare, which not many courses can offer.
This course has allowed me to gain the grades I need for university to study a primary teaching qualification. I am fully prepared to begin the next stage in my education and to pursue a career working with children thanks to the experience I have gained from my course at New College Durham.”
