Caitlin Marquis

Course: Painting & Decorating (Choices Plus)
Previous School:
 Ferryhill Business & Enterprise College

Caitlin joined the painting and decorating course at New College Durham as a Choices Plus student.  She originally enrolled on an art and design course but when she discovered it wasn’t for her she came to an open event at New College Durham and joined the painting and decorating course.

As they start later in the academic year, Choices Plus students are usually allocated a Personal Learning Coach to support them in catching up with the rest of the class, however, Caitlin excelled in her studies and didn’t require any support.

She recently competed in the live national final of Johnstone's Young Painter of the Year, a prestigious painting and decorating competition celebrating young talent.

She said:

“I originally enrolled on an art and design course in the September at another college but didn’t feel challenged by the work.  When I left the course, One Point told me about an open event at New College Durham so I came along and joined the Level 1 Painting and Decorating course and started in the November.

“I really enjoy the practical side of painting and decorating and I enjoy being able to use my creativity and bring individuality to my work. I recently took part in an in-house painting and decorating competition, which I won.  I then represented New College Durham at the Johnstone Young Painter of the Year competition in Coventry and competed against 8 other students from across the UK.  The competition was tough and we all had to paint a design freehand.  It was a fantastic experience and I hope to compete at Skill Build next year.”

Caitlin is currently studying Level 2 Painting and Decorating and hopes to gain an apprenticeship or employment as a domestic painter and decorator in the future.
