Course: BSc (Hons) Podiatry
Previous school: Central Newcastle High School
Claire always wanted to be a doctor but left school without A-Levels. Studying the podiatry degree at New College Durham has given her a stepping stone into medical school and a source of income to pay her medical degree tuition fees.
She said: “I decided to study at New College Durham because of the location and facilities, plus they were the only college in the North East that offered the course that I wanted. The best thing about the campus was that it was very modern and there were three separate buildings for the different courses, so I found it made it easier to make friends with other higher education students.
“The best thing about the course was being able to gain clinical experience from the first year of the degree, which many podiatry schools are unable to offer. I was on placement at North Durham NHS podiatry department, which was brilliant. I was able to gain an insight into what it would be like to work in an NHS setting rather than private practice and was able to shadow Podiatrists as they helped higher risk patients.”
Claire started a medical degree immediately after graduating from New College Durham and is currently in her second year of five. She is also working as a self-employed Podiatrist to fund her medical degree.
Podiatry is a specialist area of healthcare, allied to medicine, which involves care and maintenance of foot and lower limb conditions.
