Owen McArdle

Courses: Level 3 Diploma Sport (Choices Plus)
Previous school attended:
St Leonard’s Catholic School

Owen, a keen sportsman, started at the College through our Choices Plus programme and began studying a Level 1 Sports programme. He quickly progressed through the levels achieving a Distinction in Level 2 Diploma in Sport, and a Merit in Level 3 Diploma in Sport. During his time here, Owen studied additional coaching qualifications and did voluntary multi-sports sessions with disabled students. Not only that but he also found time to complete the Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award, and outside of college he was an active member of Chester-le-Street Athletics Club.

A popular student, Owen overcame his shyness and worked as a Young Leader in a Summer Camp in Reading as part of the build up to London 2012 Olympics, and was elected as the Students’ Union President for the College during 2012-2013.

Owen said: “I started on the full-time Carpentry and Joinery course as I had been to the College in year 10 and 11 to do carpentry as part of the Vocational Learning Programme. However, I realised after a few months that Carpentry and Joinery wasn’t for me in the long term so I joined the College’s Choices Plus programme and changed over to Sport. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at New College Durham. The sports programme is very practical and all the staff are very supportive. There are lots of opportunities to get involved in sport and other activities to meet new people and build your self-confidence. I would definitely recommend the College and I would advise students to get involved in the Students’ Union as it has given me the confidence to get fully involved in college life and to reach my full potential."
