Ross Adams

Course: Performing Arts (and A-Level Theatre Studies)

Previous school: Tanfield School

Ross was drawn to New College Durham as a result of the wide range of subjects we offered. He said he was impressed by the standard of teaching and was inspired by the motivational course leaders.

He said:

“The performing arts course offered a really good training ground across a whole range of performing mediums. There was literally something for everyone, whether you wanted to act on stage or on film or TV, pursue a career in musical theatre or in pop music, you were able to express yourself.

“I loved the passion and enthusiasm of the lecturers. Their love for the arts clearly stemmed from enjoying their own professional career. They were able to share their experiences and knowledge which really helped me to find myself as an actor. I can’t believe the things I have been able to achieve thanks to the teaching I received at New College Durham.

“For me, the best thing about the course was the variety of modules and specialisms we were able to study. We also had opportunities to showcase our talents with regular performances, this was a great training ground for us. The staff were all very encouraging and supportive. They made me feel like I could achieve anything I wanted to and they were right!”

Ross got involved in numerous extra-curricular activities while studying at New College Durham, including being in a production with Northern Stage. He attended the College prior to our latest redevelopment and has returned to the College a few times since leaving to see end of year productions. He said:

“The drama studio was where I spent most of my time. Back then I thought the facilities were amazing but the facilities available now are even better.

“From New College Durham, I progressed to study for a bachelors degree in Performing Arts at Salford University. I wanted to further my training and it was there that I decided to focus more on acting for TV. After graduating, I got a job at ITV to try and gain some experience behind the camera.

Ross worked as a runner for Coronation Street and was offered a job as a storyliner. Following this, Ross secured work as a script editor for Emmerdale.

“During this time, I was searching for acting jobs too and secured roles on several ITV dramas and BBC comedies before being offered a role on the Channel 4 soap opera, Hollyoaks. Several years on and I am still enjoying working as a series regular on Hollyoaks. This year, I was very proud to win an award for ‘Best Male Dramatic Performance’ at the British Soap Awards 2018.

“My time at New College Durham could not have been better. I had the best experience and I owe an unending debt of gratitude to my course leader, who really was one of the best teachers I’ve ever had.”

Ross now stars in the popular Channel 4 soap opera, Hollyoaks, and has received an award for ‘Best Male Dramatic Performance’.
