This apprenticeship programme aims to provide you with the knowledge, skills and behaviours required to pursue a career in Construction and the Built Environment in a Design & Build role.
You will attend college on a day-release basis to study the HNC in Construction Management whilst also completing work based learning. You will attend the University Centre one day per week and will study key areas such as Construction Technology, the Construction Environment and Legal and Statutory Requirements.
You will also be expected to conduct additional directed and independent study during your own time away from college to complete the programme.
This course can only be completed if you have employment in the industry and your employer is supporting you.
When you apply for this course it will direct you to apply for the HNC in Construction Management, this is to ensure suitability for the HNC as a part of the apprenticeship. Please indicate at interview if you are planning to complete the apprenticeship programme.
Entry Criteria
- 4 GCSEs grade C or level 4 and above, plus 1 A Level, or 2AS Levels (40 points)
- BTEC National in a relevant construction/engineering qualification
- T-Level or an equivalent qualification
If you hold a Level 4 or Level 5 qualification, you may be eligible for some accreditation for prior learning which can be discussed on an individual basis.
You may be accepted on the course as a mature students if you have a suitable background or sector experience.
There may be a requirement to complete an Aptitude assessment (this will be advised at interview).
International students must have competent English-speaking skills and hold an IELTS score of 6.0. This can be discussed during the interview stage if there are any queries.
What are the next steps?
You will attend an interview with the course tutor and an Apprenticeship Skills Coordinator. Please allow up to an hour for your interview as you may be required to carry out an assessment. Please bring with you any former qualifications (including maths and English), National Insurance number and proof of ID.
Study Aims
This apprenticeship aims to prepare you with the skills and knowledge needed to meet the demands of employers in the construction sector. You will be able to reflect on your performance to make improvements, and you will develop the skills needed to meet the demands of employers in the construction sector, and adapt to an ever-changing world.

You will also be assessed on the knowledge, skills and behaviours set out in the apprenticeship standard. You will develop a portfolio that demonstrates and provides evidence to support your learning.

Each individual unit will use different teaching and learning strategies, including:

You will attend college on a day-release basis. You will also be expected to conduct additional independent study to complete the programme. This is essential to ensure success on your course.
HNC Units & KSB's will be assessed using:

End Point Assessment
The final assessment to complete your apprenticeship qualification is an End Point Assessment (EPA) which must be passed to achieve the full qualification.

Placement
You will be expected to work within the industry and will attend college on a day release basis.
Successful completion of the apprenticeship and HNC will allow you to further your career in industry, progress to university or to apply to study the HND in Construction Management at New College Durham.
