Age 16-18

FREE (If meet residency criteria and not enrolled at another educational institution).

If you are aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31 August in the year you begin your course, not enrolled at another educational institution and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years, your course will be FREE. Some courses will have other costs associated, such as for materials and trips.

Age 19+

If you are aged 19 or older on 31 August in the year you begin your course, not enrolled at another educational institution and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years, your course could be free dependant on the level of the course and your eligibility criteria. The level 1VRQ qualification is intended to introduce you to work within the hairdressing industry. This course will equip you with the basic skills to progress onto level 2/3 and then into industry and employment. You will develop a range of skills including shampooing, colouring and styling and will gain experience working with peers to develop your skills.

Entry Criteria

No entry requirements however good communication skills and a desire to work within the industry are required. Good prior attendance in secondary school.

Study Aims

The qualification provides the necessary skills and knowledge the students need to succeed in education and allow student to enter employment in the hairdressing sector or progress to a further level of hairdressing study.

The programme curriculum is coherently planned and sequenced towards cumulatively enough knowledge and skills for future learning and employment, which builds on the interest and passion for the hair and beauty industry and prepares the student for further learning or training at a higher level.

Teaching and Assessment

You will work with your tutor to learn the relevant practical skills and theory over the duration of the course for each unit. Practical assessments will be carried out in the salon on peers and models, once you feel you are ready to be assessed. Theory will be assessed by course work modules throughout the year, at the end of each unit.

Industry Links

Each term you will engage with external employers through lectures and hands on workshops from industry specialists. Our links with industry will ensure you will learn additional skills and improve your confidence levels as you progress at NCD. You will also be encouraged to enter competitions.

Maths and English

Maths and English will be added to your timetable if you do not achieve grade 4 or above and are a mandatory part of your timetable. Maths and English will also be embedded into theory and practical sessions.

Placement

You will not be required to undertake a work placement within level , however any additional experience will help you to develop the essential skills to work in the industry.
