This Higher National Diploma in Civil Engineering can lead to Graduate Member status with the Institution of Civil Engineers.
Civil engineers undertake research and design, direct civil engineering projects and manage the operation and maintenance of civil structures, with roles in Highways, Railways, Site engineering, Structural Design, Tunnelling and Wastewater projects.
You will attend the University Centre one day per week and will study key areas such as Science and Materials, Civil Engineering Technology, The Construction Environment, Mathematics and Principles of Structural Design.
You will also be expected to conduct additional directed and independent study to complete the programme.
The purpose of Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals in Civil Engineering is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals able to meet the demands of employers in the construction sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. The qualifications aim to widen access to higher education and enhance the career prospects of those who undertake them.
Entry Criteria
Completion of a Pearsons HNC in Civil Engineering with the following units:
Unit 1 - Construction Design Project Unit 3 - Science and Materials Unit 4 - The Construction Environment Unit 8 - Mathematics for Construction Unit 17 - Civil Engineering Technology Unit 19 - Principles of Structural Design
Plus, any 2 optional units from the approved Pearson list, subject to confirmation by college staff. Please check with staff for further information.
Study Aims
The purpose of the HND in Civil Engineering is to develop your skills as a professional.
You will be able to reflect on your performance to make improvements, and you will develop the skills needed to meet the demands of employers in the civil engineering sector and adapt to an ever-changing world.

Each individual unit will use different teaching and learning strategies, including: • Lectures • Workshops • Seminars • Individual and group presentations • Academic Tutorials • Site visits. You will attend college on a day-release basis. You will also be expected to conduct additional independent study to complete the programme. This is essential to ensure success on your course.
Successful completion of the HND will allow you to progress your career within the industry, progress to university to study for a degree top up in civil engineering.
