This interesting course will provide you with an introduction to a wide range of key subject areas within health and social care. You will gain essential skills and knowledge to help you to progress to further study. You will gain an understanding of health and social care as you study areas such as lifespan development, health and social care values, effective communication skill, healthy living and equality and diversity. You will also be able to put what you have learnt into practice through a work placement.
Entry Criteria
You will need 4 GCSEs grade D/3 (or equivalent), including maths or English Language.
You will need a satisfactory DBS check to gain entry on to this programme.
Additional Costs
All students will be required to purchase a tunic, which will be worn in all practical and work based activities. This tunic can be purchased directly from our supplier at a cost of approximately £20 (plus P&P).Students will also have an option of purchasing further, non-compulsory, items of uniform such as t-shirts (approx. £10), polo-shirts (approx. £10) and hoodies (approx. £17.50) - again all items can be purchased directly from our supplier and posted directly.All students will be asked to contribute £30 to support study costs, which will include programme specific revision and unit guides and any programme trips and visits, to support learning. This money will be paid on commencing the programme.

Teaching and Assessment
Assessment is through portfolio which includes a series of assignments as well as completing all your placement requirements. All assessments are internally graded A* to D under the CACHE framework and regulations.
Industry Links
In order to gain a deeper understanding of the health and social care industry, learners will be required to attend placement in a real work environment to support their learning. The minimum required number of placement hours is 100 for the Extended Diploma.We have strong links with a variety of leading employers within this sector. Placement
All students are required to attend and complete a 35 hours work based placement. To support this all students are required to have a satisfactory DBS check to gain entry on to this programme. This qualification uses learners' work experience as a focal point and enabling learning to be as active, practical and work-related as possible. A key feature is also the opportunity for learners to produce a personal and professional development portfolio, which links many aspects of their programme to placement.
You could progress to a Level 3 qualification in a related area, or an apprenticeship, at New College Durham. With further study you could prepare for a rewarding career as a care support worker in adult residential settings; healthcare assistant in community, primary care and acute health environments; care support worker in domiciliary services, supported living or day services; or a community-based support worker.
