Level 5 Prescription Only Medicine Administration

You must be registered with the HCPC as a Podiatrist or Chiropodist.

You will be expected to evidence a current Disclosure and Barring Service report prior to enrolment.

If English if your first language, you must provide evidence of maths and English at Level 2 (GCSE grade 4/C and above or equivalent).

To fulfil the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) if you are applying from outside of the UK, you will need to demonstrate your English Language skills with an IELTS score an overall 7.0 with a score of at least 6.5 in each component.

You will also be expected to demonstrate your skills in basic life support and anaphylaxis.

You will be required to provide evidence of adequate third-party indemnity insurance to cover the period of the programme. This can be obtained either independently or via the Royal College of Podiatry.

You will need a computer with internet access in order to undertake the theoretical element of the module.

This module aims to provide you with the knowledge and skills necessary to gain annotation in POMS for administration for use in clinical practice once registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

Successful completion of the module will lead to the annotation of Prescriptions only Medicine – Administration on the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) register on graduation.

This module comprises of an overview of medicines administration with an emphasis on the Local Anaesthesia agents used in podiatric practice including:

• The pharmacology and pharmacodynamics
• Legal, ethical and governance issues relating to the administration of Local Anaesthesia
• The administration of Local Anaesthesia procedures and practice
• Investigation and practice of procedures relating to patient assessment and consent with consideration of contra/relative indications
• The knowledge and practical demonstration of clinical emergency procedures and protocols.
• Management of patient relevant to the administration of Local Anaesthesia and digital surgery.

A range of assessment methods are used to enable you to demonstrate the knowledge that underpins the administration of local analgesia; the practical skills of delivering local analgesia and the decision-making skills needed for patient assessment.

You will complete a formative assessment for the teaching and practice elements of the module through:

• Reflective practice
• Group and peer assessment
• Case studies
• Group activities
• Informal quizzes
• Question and answer sessions.

The summative exam is designed to test your knowledge of local analgesia and your critical thinking skills through the use of:

• Multi choice questions
• Short answer questions based on case scenarios

OSCE is designed to test your scenario based practical skills and will involve a simulated based practical element.

This module is validated by the Open University, the Royal College of Podiatry and the HCPC.
