Age 16-18

FREE (If meet residency criteria and not enrolled at another educational institution).

If you are aged 16, 17 or 18 on 31 August in the year you begin your course, not enrolled at another educational institution and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years, your course will be FREE. Some courses will have other costs associated, such as for materials and trips.

Age 19+

If you are aged 19 or older on 31 August in the year you begin your course, not enrolled at another educational institution and have been resident in the UK for the past 3 years, your course could be free dependant on the level of the course and your eligibility criteria. You will get to grips with a number of popular treatments to prepare you for a career in the beauty industry, such as facials, eye treatments, manicure, pedicure, waxing and head massage.

You will benefit from opportunities to work in our fully equipped salons to build your confidence working with clients and developing industry standard skills.

Entry Criteria

You are required to have GCSE Grade 3 or above in maths and English. You will complete various theory and practical skills tests to establish your suitability to the course.

Additional Costs

You will be required to purchase a uniform and kit for your course. Information on prices for these items will be shared at your meet the tutor chat.

Additionally, as part of your course you will be expected to pay £20 towards trips and visits and a £5 deposit for a locker.

Study Aims

This course aims to provide you with the fundamental knowledge and skills required to pursue a career within the beauty industry.

You will develop the following skills:

  • Communication skills – for working within a team and building relationships with clients.
  • Organisation skills - for reception duties and booking in clients.
  • Marketing skills – to sell and promote products.
  • Practical skills – to enable you to perform manicures, facials and eyebrow and eyelash tints.

Modules Studied

You will study the following modules:

  • Working in the beauty related industries
  • Following Health and Safety practice in the salon
  • Client care and communications in beauty related industries
  • Providing facial skin care
  • Promoting products and services to clients in a salon
  • Removing hair using waxing techniques
  • Providing manicure treatments
  • Providing pedicure treatments
  • Providing eyelash and eyebrow treatments, including eyelash perming
  • Creating an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector
  • Head massage
  • Salon reception duties.

You may have the opportunity to learn additional skills, such as:

  • Gel nails
  • Brow lamination
  • Body tanning
  • Competition skills.

Any times indicated are based on current courses and may be subject to change in future years. Full timetables will be confirmed at the start of each course.

Teaching and Assessment

You will be assigned a personal tutor for the duration of your course.

You will carry out practical assessments with your tutor once you feel you are ready to be assessed. The assessments will be carried out at various points in the year. Each unit will involve assignments and/or internal and external exams.

You will be required to provide some clients and models throughout the year to work on, so that you can maximise your learning and explore the skills you have been learning.

The programme will combine one theory session and three practical sessions, as well as one independent client session, per week. You will face a theoretical and practical assessment on completion of each unit.

All learners are supported throughout the learning from their personal tutor. Additional support is available were necessary through Personal Learning Coaches (PLC's).

We encourage all students to enter competitions, such as World skills and the AHT competition.

Maths and English

Alongside the main programme of study, if you do not hold a Grade 4 in maths or English you will undertake GCSE maths and English or functional skills.

Placement

You will be required to undertake a work placement within an external salon for a minimum of 70 hours, to ensure you develop the essential skills to work in this fast paced industry.

It is your responsibility to find a work placement, therefore, you can decide whether you want to carry out your placement in a block period of time or one day a week.
