These achievements recognise our dedication and ongoing commitment to creating an environment where all staff feel valued, respected, and supported. They also celebrate the commitment of our staff and wider community to nurturing a culture of belonging and inclusion in every aspect of college life. In recognition of these achievements, we have been working with the College Collective to share our knowledge, collaborating, and networking with other colleges.
Creating a truly inclusive community requires more than policies or initiatives, it requires a shared commitment across our entire organisation to listen, learn, and act together.
As part of this whole-college approach, we have invited staff to share their experiences and reflections on topics that deepen our understanding of one another, from navigating health conditions that are often misunderstood, to celebrating and honouring diverse religious observances and traditions.
Through these open and honest conversations, we continue to learn how to better support one another, celebrate difference, and create an environment where every individual feels seen, valued, and empowered to thrive.
In support of ADHD Awareness Month and recent Dyslexia Awareness Week, we are sharing anonymous insights from staff who have generously shared their experiences with ADHD and dyslexia. These reflections help raise awareness by highlighting real experiences with ADHD and Dyslexia within our teaching community.
Elaine Bonham, Executive Director of HR and Corporate Services, New College Durham, said: “At New College Durham, our greatest strength lies in our people. Every member of staff brings unique perspectives, talents, and experiences that enrich our college community. As we continue to champion inclusion, it is vital that we deepen our understanding of colleagues living with mental health conditions and neurodivergent profiles such as dyslexia and ADHD.
Recognising and valuing these differences not only supports individual wellbeing but also drives creativity, innovation, and empathy across our teams. This is ongoing work — not a single initiative, but a shared commitment to ensuring that every colleague feels seen, supported, and able to thrive. Together, we continue to build a culture where openness, respect, and understanding are at the heart of all we do.”
