New College Durham is celebrating after being officially recognised for its excellence in education and student support, following a successful inspection by the British Council in May 2025. The college has once again been awarded full accreditation, with inspectors praising the quality of teaching, leadership, and student care across the board.

The inspection, which took place over three days, assessed the college against five key areas: management, premises and resources, teaching and learning, welfare and student services, and safeguarding under 18s. In every category, the college met the required standard, with inspectors recommending continued accreditation.

The British Council team highlighted some outstanding strengths, including:

  • Strategic and quality management
  • Staff development and professional support
  • Student administration and guidance services
  • Premises, facilities, and learning resources
  • Academic staff expertise and course design
  • High-quality teaching and learner support
  • Student welfare, accommodation, and enrichment opportunities
  • Safeguarding for under-18s

Inspectors praised New College Durham for providing a safe, welcoming, and inspiring environment where students can thrive, backed by a dedicated team of staff who go above and beyond to ensure every learner gets the most from their experience.

Principal and Chief Executive, Andy Broadbent said:

“We are delighted with the outcome of this inspection, which recognises the hard work and dedication of our staff and the excellent experience we provide for our students. This accreditation not only celebrates the achievements of our English Language Centre but also reflects the college’s wider commitment to excellence across all areas of teaching, learning, and student support.”

The English Language Centre (ELC) was given particular recognition for its work in delivering high-quality general English and ESOL Skills for Life courses for both young people and adults. It also offers bespoke courses for international groups, making it an important hub for global learners choosing to study in the North East. With modern facilities, a strong focus on wellbeing, and a vibrant international community, the ELC was highlighted as an area of real success.

Located at Framwellgate Moor, Durham, the college serves around 6,000 students each year. It offers a diverse range of courses, from vocational training and apprenticeships to higher education and postgraduate study. This latest inspection success underlines New College Durham’s role as a leading education provider in the North East, committed to raising aspirations, supporting local communities, and preparing learners for bright futures.
